BITCOIN FUTURES NOW BEING TRADED IN CHICAGO - Bitcoin Going Full Mainstream
Bitcoin has taken a step toward legitimacy with the launch of a product on a Chicago exchange that allows investors to take bets on its price in the future. The new contract on the Chicago Board Options Exchange came as the digital currency jumped another 10%, sparking fresh warnings of a speculative bubble after last week’s 40% climb in price. Bitcoin was trading at $16,200 – up 10% on the day – while the new futures contract trading in Chicago showed that traders were expecting the cryptocurrency to be trading at even higher prices in January. The futures contract trading on the CBOE allows traders to take bets – or to protect themselves – on the price of bitcoin next month. It started trading just before midnight (in London) on Sunday at $15,460, hit a high of $18,700 and then dropped back to $17,800. Such was the price volatility when the contract launched that trading had to be halted twice through so-called circuit breakers and the CBOE had to admit that its website was creaking because of the heavy traffic although its trading platform kept working. Bitcoin broke above the $12,000 mark Wednesday morning Asia-time, as the cryptocurrency continued its march higher. The digital currency quickly leaped further. As of 12:19 p.m., ET, bitcoin traded about 8.5 percent higher near $12,684, according to industry site CoinDesk. Earlier in the day, bitcoin hit a record high of $12,810.22. The bitcoin offshoot, bitcoin cash, traded slightly lower near $1,507, while digital currency ethereum also traded slightly lower near $441, according to CoinMarketCap. Bitcoin began 2017 at less than $1,000 per token, but it has been on an absolute tear in recent months: It crossed $5,000 in October and touched above $11,000 for the first time less than two months later, according to CoinDesk data. BIT RISKY? How to buy Bitcoin, is it safe to buy the cryptocurrency and what are Iota and Ethereum? The controversial digital currency Bitcoin seems to be soaring to ever greater heights, making headlines around the world First the Nordea Bank AB chief executive called it a “joke” and an “ absurd” construction. Then Danish banks said they wouldn’t touch cash from bitcoin speculation. Now, one of Scandinavia’s biggest investors is airing its skepticism. ATP, Denmark’s largest pension fund with about $120 billion in assets under management, says it’s steering clear of bitcoin despite signs the cryptocurrency is gaining a foothold in the derivatives market. And we would do that based on established risk premiums. Bitcoin doesn’t have an established risk premium.” But there’s a growing community of bitcoin converts and they’ve lately driven its price to dizzying heights. It surpassed $12,000 on Wednesday, as investors hope the use of futures contracts will help it gain legitimacy. Cboe Global Markets Inc. has said it will start trading bitcoin futures on Dec. 10, while CME Group Inc.’s contracts are set to debut on Dec. 18. Nasdaq Inc. is planning to offer futures in 2018, according to a person familiar with the matter. Cantor Fitzgerald LP’s Cantor Exchange is creating a bitcoin derivative, and startup LedgerX already offers options. It’s also possible to invest in bitcoin via exchange-traded notes in Scandinavia. Bitcoin $1,500 Party
The criminals know Psychology 101. One of the best way to trap a wild animal is the same for trapping people -- enticement! Set the trap with a juicy "reward" and then sit back and let nature run its course. In the case of humans that enticement - money - targets a basic passion : need and greed. The criminals will allow Bitcoin to go to 2,000 then 5,000 then 10,000 and who knows how high after that. The goal is simple - get the clueless people to accept digital money over hard money and then, when the prey is in the trap, slam the door shut! Since the 1990's I've been voicing that the day the criminals get the world to wholly accept a cashless system - be it Bitcoin or any other - that day will be THE END of the world as we've known it. The loudest "I TOLD YOU SO" awaits many clueless folk. Final comment : offer me a free 1-ounce gold coin ($1,260) and I'll run to get it; offer me a free Bitcoin ($1,480) and I'll politely pass.

Bitcoin Hitting All-Time Highs By Almost Every Metric
The future economy will be totally digital and decentralized. Bitcoin is
a worldwide-distributed decentralized peer-to-peer censorship-resistant
trustless and permissionless deflationary system/currency (see
Blockchain technology) backed by mathematics, open source code,
cryptography and the most powerful and secure decentralized
computational network on the planet, orders of magnitude more powerful
than google and government combined. There is a limit of 21 million
bitcoins (divisible in smaller units). "Backed by Government" money is
not backed by anything and is infinitely printed at will by Central
Banks. Bitcoin is limited and decentralized.
Receive and transfer money, from cents (micropayments) to thousands:
* Almost for free (a few cents fee).
* Borderless (no country can stop it from going in/out or confiscate)
* Trustless (nobody needs to trust anybody for it to work)
* Privacy (no need to expose personal information)
* Securely (encrypted cryptographically)
* Permissionless (no approval from central powers needed)
* Instantly (from seconds to a few minutes)
* Open source (auditable by anybody)
* Worldwide distributed (from anywhere to anywhere on the planet)
* Censorship resistant (no government can stop its use)
* Peer-to-peer (no intermediaries with a cut)
* Portable (easier to carry/move than cash, gold and silver)
* Public ledger (transparent, seen by everybody)
* Scalable (each bitcoin is divisible down to 8 decimals)
* Decentralized (distributed with no single point of failure)
* Deflationary (its supply goes down with time until reaching 21 million
ever)
* Immutable global registry (can’t be altered/hacked by nobody)
* No chargebacks-No fraud ('push' vs' 'pull' transactions).
And that’s just as currency, Bitcoin has many more uses and applications

Jim Rickard's Top Two Reasons to Bet Against Bitcoin
Bitcoin prices have dropped nearly 50% in the past three months. Jim Rickards says that price volatility is just one of the problems plaguing the cryptocurrency…
Bitcoin is interesting. I’m not technophobic. I say, if people want to invest in it, that’s fine. I don’t own any. I don’t recommend them to clients. I have a couple problems with them. Number 1, they’re unproven in the business cycle. Bitcoin was invented in 2009. The economy’s only been expanding since then. It’s been expanding at a very weak level, a very weak pace, but it has been in expansion. There has not been a contraction. So, we don’t know how bitcoin is going to perform in the down cycle. We have some sense of how other asset classes do so that’s one problem. The second problem, and it’s a big one, is the issue of taxes. If I buy a bitcoin for $200.00 and then it goes up to $300.00 and I cash it in for $300.00 of goods and services, I have $100.00 gain. I have to put that on my tax return. It’s no different than buying and selling a share of stock. I daresay a lot of bitcoin users are not doing that, which means they’re tax evaders, and we know from the tea party scandals that the government is using the IRS for selective political enforcement, so I’d hate to be a bitcoin guy who failed to report a gain, which can be a felony, and if you’re on the wrong side of the government, you could be targeted. So, that’s a genuine concern. I think what’s interesting about bitcoin is that it’s a kind of currency. It’s a store of value although it’s got a lot of volatility, but it’s also a technology. I think bitcoin may be like the Neanderthals in the sense that the currency itself goes extinct the way the Neanderthals did, but the DNA lives.

Bitcoin Will Bite the Dust featuring Kevin Dowd
CATO’S 32ND ANNUAL MONETARY CONFERENCE —brings leading scholars together and advocates for fundamental monetary reform to discuss:
- The bitcoin revolution and future of crypto-currencies
- How technology will drive further innovations so that private currencies become a reality
- The role of gold in a decentralized monetary regime
- The steps necessary to return to constitutional money based on the convertibility principle and free banking
When the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, its powers were limited and the United States was still on the gold standard. Today the Fed has virtually unlimited power and the dollar has no backing. Limited, constitutional government requires a rules based, free-market monetary system with a stable-valued dollar, not the topsy-turvy fiat dollar that now exists under central banking. This conference examines the case for sound money and the reforms needed to realize it.

Kitco News sits with the Bitcoin advocate George Gilder to find out why he is so interested in the virtual currency. Bitcoin Arrests Cloud New York Hearings on Virtual Currency
The U.S. Attorney made two arrests just one day ahead of the New York Department of Financial Services hearings on virtual currencies, including Charlie Shrem, CEO of BitInstant and Vice Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation. Nicholas Colas of ConvergEx believes this won't harm the currency and that it's natural to shake out the bad guys in the currency because it came from a less than transparent place. However, with regulation and adoption, Colas believes bitcoin will gain credibility.

Bitcoin 101 Blackboard - Why Bitcoin's Growth is Normal & The S-Curves You Could Never See
Economists are up in arms, claiming that bitcoin's 1000% annual growth
is faster than anything they've ever seen. Because of that, they lash
out, calling bitcoin volatile, a bubble, a pyramid scheme, etc. But
don't worry, we put on our VC glasses, compare the 4.5-year-old bitcoin
to facebook, twitter, google at the same periods in their growth. The
result is that Bitcoin's growth is as exponential, as volatile and as
normal as any enormous tech giant. And just for fun we threw in a little
bit about feral rats reproducing on a desert island.
This is the 2nd episode debunking bitcoin myths series. Overall, Bitcoin 101 blackboard is a beginner's course in bitcoin. We hope you enjoy. Please like and subscribe or drop some comments, suggestions or critiques. And remember the official WBN launch is coming up : January 1st, 2014.
